Good article explaining what a good position that the team is in relative to the cap situation not only next year, but the year after that as well. A good read. One thing that he doesnt mention though, is that Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett, Richard Marshall and Demitri Patterson will all likely be released next offseason, if not before than in the case of Patterson, creating an additional 25 million in cap room (and about 4 mil of dead space).

After that, the team would only be on the hook for about 43 mil for players currently on the roster towards next seasons 123 mil cap. Even taking 4-6 mil each for the 2013 and 2014 draft classes into account, and assuming that they spend every cent available to them this offseason, that still leaves in the neighborhood of 30 mil in cap room heading into the 2014 offseason, and only Rashad Jones, Koa Misi and Paul Solia are up as UFA after next year.

Looks like a good spot again.

We're in a great spot for Ireland to help Philbin put his stamp on the team, it will be interesting to watch what moves we make. I think Dansby might have been at risk this offseason, as he doesn't really earn his salary, but he plays well enough that with the cap space we have we can keep him for another year and then look for a replacement (or get someone later on in this draft to groom behind him).

I will say one thing, I'm glad we're in the position we are and not the fuckup that the Jets are at the moment.

It would have been nearly pointless to cut Dansby this offseason, as the cap hit would have been sizable. Burnett would have a big hit too. NEXT year though, its the other way around. HUGE cap number for Dansby, and small hit. Big cap number for Burnett, and very small hit.

We'll almost certainly be looking for LBs to replace them, and because of that, I think that Misi is more likely to stay around if he can be reasonable about his value.
